A serial study of Moscow’s metal and punk scene from 2018-2021. Self published 2021.
My debut photobook focuses on the audience at punk and metal shows. There are no bands or musicians in the photographs — the crowd itself is the subject.
I use flash and slow shutter speeds to capture the physical intensity of the pit. The project is also influenced by Jungian ideas about ritual and the collective unconscious. In this sense, a mosh pit can be seen as a modern communal ritual: a place where people can briefly forget about work, money, relationships, and other everyday concerns.
The photographs show these moments of release, when people simply become part of the collective unconsciousness.
